Is The Japanese White Strawberry Worth The Hefty Price Tag?

Is The Japanese White Strawberry Worth The Hefty Price Tag?

What Is A Japanese White Strawberry? When I first heard the word “luxurious” to describe a strawberry, my cynicism surfaced big time. How can a strawberry be luxurious? But when I actually saw one, and thought what it would be like to eat a $10 – $20 strawberry, I can totally see why they’d call a strawberry luxurious. These Japanese strawberries, which are a big part of the luxury fruit market in Japan, are white inside and out. Not at all unlike the Japanese black diamond watermelon. They are super hard to grow and mostly (if not only) found in Japan. Because of this, you’ll occasionally find them in very select spots throughout Canada […]

Mangoes grown with hot spring heat in wintry Hokkaido make overseas debut

A mango producer in northern Japan’s Hokkaido which grows the tropical fruit using heat from local hot springs and harvests them in winter has begun shipping to high-end supermarkets in Hong Kong in December. This is the first time for Noraworks Japan, headquartered in Obihiro, to export its mangoes overseas since it began cultivating the fruit over 10 years ago. As it is now able to provide a stable supply, the company said it hopes to further develop sales channels abroad. Noraworks’ sweet and succulent “Hakugin no Taiyo (Sun in the Snow)” mangoes have a sugar content of 15 percent or higher. Four mangoes were shipped to Hong Kong’s upscale […]

Koge Hanagoshogaki persimmons tree-ripened in western Japan

TOTTORI, Dec. 5 — Koge Hanagoshogaki persimmons are being harvested in the town of Yazu, Tottori Prefecture. The persimmons, a local specialty, are a variety that is ripened on trees until after the onset of frost to remove the astringency. During harvest time between late November and mid-December, trees are stripped of leaves and left only with the fruit, turning orchards bright orange. According to JA Tottori Inaba, a local agricultural cooperative, 87 farms in the area are cultivating the fruit on a total of some 12 hectares of land. They plan to ship roughly […]
